Hi everyone, how are you doing today?
Let's celebrate these last days of Mental Health Awareness month by talking about mental health in the tech industry (+ why you should always put your health first). Mental health is still not discussed enough in the corporate world, and the demanding work expectation put on tech workers definitely doesn't help (that's why it is so important to do your research before applying to companies, this way you can find transparent workspaces that match your needs). Let's start with some crazy shocking data taken from the OSMI Mental Health in Tech Survey:
- 51% of tech professionals have been diagnosed with a mental health condition
- 57% of tech industry employees reported burnout
- 71% of tech workers said their productivity is affected by a mental health issue
Here's a fact: our field of work is challenging. Technology is always changing and developers are constantly learning something new, but being given unrealistic expectations and experiencing burnouts should not be a part of it. If you're experiencing something like that, don't be afraid to speak to your manager or supervisor!
